Chapter Fourteen

Sean kept glancing at his phone. It was oddly quiet considering the bomb he had just dropped on his brothers via text. He realized why in the next couple of minutes when Adrian marched into his office followed by Jaime. Dean would probably take a little longer as Monday mornings usually found him working in his downtown office.

“When did you know?” Adrian asked as soon as Jaime shut the door.

“He’ll be here at around quarter past nine,” Sean said dodging the question.

“And mother is okay with it?” Adrian said.

Sean shrugged. “As father said the other day, he’s an adult and this is his company. He can come whenever he wants.”

“That’s not what I mean,” Adrian exploded.

“Father is not in a state to come back to work,” Jaime said. “You know that as well as we do.”

“Maybe,” Sean said calmly. “But there’s no stopping him so let’s go along with it. He gets tired quickly so he won’t stay for long.”

“What’s the plan?” Adrian said.

“Well, we thought we could have everyone go downstairs just before father arrives and we can welcome him,” Sean said. “Something low key.”

“Who is we?” Adrian said.

“Maisie,” Sean said. “I talked about it with her.”

“Are you two dating?” Jaime said.

“Sort of,” Sean said and grinned.

“You know mother doesn’t like her very much,” Jaime said.

“Oh.” That was news to Sean.

He noticed that Jaime’s words did not surprise Adrian. Was he the only who did not know that his mother had issues with the woman he was dating? “How do you know?”

“She said so last evening after you guys left,” Jaime said.

Adrian glared at him. “Mother will come around,” Adrian said. “So back to today. Do you need us to do anything?”

“Yeah, let the managers in your department know and have everyone downstairs at ten past nine.”

After his brothers left, Sean waited for five minutes and then went in search of Maisie in the marketing department. She had a cubicle on the floor which offered little privacy.

“You prefer this to what you had?” he said.

Her face was glowing. She rested her arms on the desk and smiled at him. God, she was beautiful. And smart.

“I like being in the middle of the action,” she said, indicating the people around her, some on phones, others working on their computers. “The energy here is amazing.”

“I’m glad you’re happy,” Sean said. “I just came to say good morning.”

She narrowed her eyes. “We texted good morning.”

“Not the same thing as saying it face to face,” Sean said. “I like looking at you. I also wanted to invite you for dinner.”

She made a pixie face. “It’s Monday. Who goes for a date on a Monday?”

“Us,” he said. “We ate at your favorite restaurant. It’s only right that we should do mine now.”

“That’s emotional blackmail,” Maisie protested laughing.

“No, it’s persuasion skills.” Sean got up. “I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“I’ll be waiting. Hey, everything ready for your father?” Maisie whispered.

“Yes,” Sean said. “His secretary will hold a welcome back banner. I hope he doesn’t think it’s too much.
